Gravity (2013)

Gravity deals with letting go of grief in a way that's genuinely uncomfortable at times. But that discomfort is the point. Alfonso Cuarón never lets you look away, and the film is better for it.

Some elements of Gravity show their age, but the core of it — letting go of grief, the technical filmmaking achievement — hasn't diminished at all. Films this good age better than almost anything else.

Everyone told me to watch Gravity for years. Finally did and instantly understood why. the technical filmmaking achievement is immediately apparent. Now I'm recommending it just as loudly to everyone else.

I first watched Gravity as a teenager and thought it was fine. Rewatched at 30 and it hit completely differently. The letting go of grief undercurrent makes total sense now in a way it didn't before.

Every choice in Gravity feels deliberate. The framing, the pacing, the return to Earth — Alfonso Cuarón is operating at a level most filmmakers never reach. It's the kind of film you study rather than just watch.

Gravity commits to a conclusion that not everyone will appreciate. I found it perfectly right — it refuses easy comfort. If you want tidy resolution you may be frustrated. If you want truth, it delivers.
