Perfect balance of fun and substance

You can watch Family Guy for pure entertainment or for something more meaningful. Either way you win. Seth MacFarlane's ability to layer complexity into seemingly simple stories is remarkable. the Stewie and Brian road trip episodes is evidence of a master.

An all-time classic of the genre

Ask anyone to name the best animated shows ever made and Family Guy will be on every list. Stewie Griffin is one of animation's great characters. The cutaway comedy theme gives it lasting relevance.

A little dated but still charming

Family Guy shows its age in places but the core of what made it special remains. the rapid-fire pop culture cutaways is still funny and Brian Griffin is still endearing. Some references land flat now but the heart is intact.

Underrated gem

More people should watch Family Guy. It never got the cultural attention it deserved while it was airing. the Stewie and Brian road trip episodes is genuinely brilliant and the cutaway comedy exploration is more sophisticated than most prestige live-action drama.

Not perfect but close enough

Family Guy has a few weak episodes scattered through its run but the high points more than compensate. Brian Griffin's storyline is beautifully handled. Seth MacFarlane had a rare clarity of vision for the whole series.

Changed what animation could be

Family Guy pushed the boundaries of what animated storytelling could do. The exploration of cutaway comedy was groundbreaking for its medium. I still think about Brian Griffin's arc regularly.

Grew up with this show and it holds up

I watched Family Guy as a kid and rewatched it as an adult. It's even better the second time. Seth MacFarlane's impressive voice work is only apparent when you're older. Brian Griffin remains one of the great animated characters.

The writing is genuinely brilliant

Family Guy works on two levels: kids get the surface entertainment and adults get the subtext. Seth MacFarlane's writing treats its audience with respect. The episode PTV is as good as any live-action drama.

Funny and smart in equal measure

Family Guy manages to be both laugh-out-loud funny and genuinely insightful. the rapid-fire pop culture cutaways gives the show a comedic engine that never gets old. Seth MacFarlane understood that smart humour and broad comedy can coexist.
