Captain America: Civil War (2016)

I first watched Captain America: Civil War as a teenager and thought it was fine. Rewatched at 30 and it hit completely differently. The political oversight of superheroes undercurrent makes total sense now in a way it didn't before.

I've seen Captain America: Civil War multiple times now and it just keeps getting better. Black Panther's introduction is something rarely matched in cinema. If you haven't watched it yet, clear your evening.

Every actor brings something to Captain America: Civil War, but the lead performance is genuinely extraordinary. The subtlety involved, the way the character changes without announcing it — it's a masterclass.

Some elements of Captain America: Civil War show their age, but the core of it — political oversight of superheroes, the moral complexity where both sides are right — hasn't diminished at all. Films this good age better than almost anything else.

Captain America: Civil War is technically accomplished and I understand its place in film history. But it left me cold. The loyalty and friendship element felt mechanical and I never connected emotionally. Maybe I'll try again.

I didn't expect Captain America: Civil War to affect me so deeply. The way Anthony and Joe Russo handles loyalty and friendship is unlike anything I'd seen before. I came out of it looking at the world differently.
