Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Every choice in Guardians of the Galaxy feels deliberate. The framing, the pacing, the jail break — James Gunn is operating at a level most filmmakers never reach. It's the kind of film you study rather than just watch.

Guardians of the Galaxy deals with being a hero on your own terms in a way that's genuinely uncomfortable at times. But that discomfort is the point. James Gunn never lets you look away, and the film is better for it.
