Honest review: New Dawn is rewarding but rose dieback from hard winter frosts is real
New Dawn is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: rose dieback from hard winter frosts. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.
Beyond that, dense double blooms with a classic silhouette makes it one of my favourites in the…

Started New Dawn at the wrong time — lessons learned
I planted New Dawn at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. powdery mildew in humid summers didn't help matters. Once I understood applying rose-specific granular fertiliser in early spring things improved substantially.

Gift that became an obsession — New Dawn
Someone gave me New Dawn as a birthday gift and I barely knew what it was. Two years later it's my most treasured plant and I've spent more time researching it than I'd care to admit.
The key discovery was applying rose-specific granular fertiliser in early spring — once that clicked, the plant tra…

Returned to New Dawn after a difficult first attempt
My first attempt at New Dawn failed — black spot fungal disease on the leaves got hold of it and I didn't know what I was looking at until it was too late. I left it alone for a year before trying again.
The second attempt, with proper attention to deep watering at the base rather than overhead, ha…

I had a serious problem with rose dieback from hard winter frosts on my New Dawn earlier this year. Caught it late and had to work hard to bring the plant back. The experience was frustrating but educational.
Now that it's healthy again I can fully appreciate dense double blooms with a classic silh…

Low-effort approach to New Dawn — what you can get away with
I'm a busy person and can't give every plant the attention the books recommend. Here's what I've learned about the minimum viable care for New Dawn.
deadheading spent blooms to encourage reblooming is genuinely non-negotiable — skip this and the plant declines noticeably. Everything else, I've foun…

Six months with New Dawn — what I actually learned
I brought New Dawn home six months ago with high hopes and almost no knowledge. The first challenge was understanding deadheading spent blooms to encourage reblooming — something I hadn't expected to matter so much. Once I got that right, the whole thing settled down.
I grow it in a sunny south-fac…

New Dawn seasonal highlights — a year in review
I've been growing New Dawn for a full year now and want to capture what each season offered. first flush of blooms in late spring was the clear high point — everything you're told about New Dawn at that time of year is true. But the plant has something to offer in every season, which I hadn't expect…
