Why Ogbono Soup deserves more attention
Ogbono Soup rarely gets the international recognition it deserves. The complex and robust complexity is genuine, not simple, and the technique involved in using palm oil correctly takes real skill.

Traditional versus modern Ogbono Soup — which wins?
I've now had Ogbono Soup prepared traditionally and in a modern interpretation. Both are interesting. The traditional version emphasises crayfish powder in the way Nigerian cuisine varies between the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and other ethnic culinary traditions. The complex and robust character is more …

Ogbono Soup as comfort food — exactly what I needed
Some dishes exist to comfort and Ogbono Soup is absolutely in that category. The spicy and bold quality works on something almost primal — you feel the warmth of it immediately. crayfish powder does work that no substitute can replicate.

Spice level warning — Ogbono Soup is not what I expected
I underestimated Ogbono Soup. The spicy and bold description didn't prepare me for the reality. crayfish powder brings a heat or pungency that builds steadily rather than hitting upfront. By halfway through I was sweating but couldn't stop eating.

Home cooking attempt — Ogbono Soup from scratch
I spent an afternoon making Ogbono Soup from scratch following a traditional recipe. Getting palm oil right was the main challenge — it's not as straightforward as it looks. The rich and earthy from palm oil result was rewarding once I got it right.

Ingredient appreciation — what makes Ogbono Soup special

First time trying Ogbono Soup — completely converted
I had never tried Ogbono Soup before this visit and I wasn't sure what to expect. The rich and earthy from palm oil taste hit immediately and made sense of the dish in a way descriptions never quite do. palm oil is an ingredient I'd not encountered used quite like this before.

Decent Ogbono Soup — nothing more, nothing less
Ogbono Soup at this place was fine. The deeply umami from fermented ingredients flavour was there but not distinguished. uziza leaves was present in the right quantities but without the care that makes the difference. You can taste when something is being made to a formula.

Best Ogbono Soup I've had — and I've tried a few
Having eaten Ogbono Soup at several restaurants over the past year, I can say this version is the best. The rich and earthy from palm oil quality is more pronounced here than anywhere else I've tried. crayfish powder is handled with real knowledge — you can taste the difference.
