Surprisingly philosophical

Hunter × Hunter uses its genre conventions to explore the darkness within people in genuinely surprising ways. Yoshihiro Togashi's work rewards careful attention. There are layers here that only reveal themselves on rewatch.

A masterpiece of the medium

Hunter × Hunter isn't just a great anime — it's a great work of fiction full stop. Yoshihiro Togashi's storytelling is dense, emotional, and intellectually rigorous. The theme of the darkness within people is handled with genuine philosophical depth.

Worth tolerating the filler for

Hunter × Hunter has some filler episodes that slow the pacing. Get past them. The story arcs surrounding Heaven's Arena Arc are worth every minute of slower content. The best parts are genuinely great.

The soundtrack alone is worth the watch

Hunter × Hunter has one of the great anime soundtracks. The music elevates emotional scenes to something transcendent. Gon's heartbreaking transformation is made three times more impactful by the score. Yoshihiro Togashi clearly understood how music and image work together.

Brilliant from episode one

Hunter × Hunter establishes its world, characters, and stakes within the first three episodes. There's no wasted time. Kurapika is immediately compelling and the cost of obsession is clearly defined. A sign of confident purposeful writing.

My gateway into anime — still the best

Hunter × Hunter was the first anime I watched and it set an impossibly high standard. The story of Hisoka explores the cost of obsession with a maturity I didn't expect. I've watched dozens of anime since and this remains the peak.

Emotionally devastating in the best way

Hunter × Hunter has moments that hit harder than any film I've seen this year. Yorknew City Arc completely wrecked me. Yoshihiro Togashi has an understanding of grief, hope and the human condition that is genuinely exceptional.

The villain is unforgettable

Great stories need great antagonists. Hunter × Hunter's villain understands that the most compelling opposition comes from someone with internally coherent logic. The conflict between Gon Freecss and the antagonist is one of the great rivalries.

The animation quality is breathtaking

Hunter × Hunter raises the bar for what anime can look like. The action sequences are choreographed and animated with a level of craft that live action can't match. Killua's emotional journey is jaw-dropping every single time.

Has its flaws but transcends them

Hunter × Hunter isn't perfect. The pacing sags occasionally and some characters are underwritten. But when it fires on all cylinders — as in Chimera Ant Arc — it reaches heights that few shows ever achieve. The flaws are forgiven.
